The best pub gardens in London

31 May 2021

As Covid restrictions gradually lift, people are excitedly heading to pubs to reconnect with old friends and loved ones. There’s nothing better than a drink in the sunshine with friends, especially ones you haven’t seen for a while, and few places better for that than a leafy pub garden.

We’ve asked the staff at our London stores for the best pub gardens London has to offer, and they’ve put together an impressive ist. Our thanks to the teams at our Wandsworth, Ealing, Barking and Hornsey self-storage facilities and everyone else who contributed suggestions.

Here are our suggestions for the top London pubs with gardens, sorted by area and postcode.

North London pubs with beer gardens

The 16th-century Spaniards Inn is host to one of the best beer gardens North London has to offer, and it’s right beside Hampstead Heath if you fancy a post-pint stroll. In the winter, check out the heated garden at The Garden Gate, which is also moments away from Hampstead Heath. The Garden Gate is also dog-friendly and popular with dog owners, making it a great place to socialise for you and your pet.

For pies and scotch eggs, try The Beehive’s partially-covered terrace and pub garden, and for some entertainment, including bar games and ping pong, we recommend The Crooked Billet.

East London pubs with beer gardens

In terms of pub gardens, London’s east side has plenty to choose from. The Anchor & Hope is a small, local pub on the bank of the River Lea – there’s nothing like a nice cocktail as you watch houseboats drift by. Similarly atmospheric is Dial Arch, a pub and dining room in a converted munitions factory, which provides a great terrace.

East London pubs with beer gardens will struggle to beat the classic Prospect of Whitby, set beside the Thames at Wapping. It claims to be the city’s oldest riverside pub, dating back to approximately 1520. In terms of historic pubs, the Blind Beggar is famous as the site of a murder by gangster Ronnie Kray in the 1960s – but it also has a charming pub garden.

For a dog-friendly pub garden, try the Red Lion or the Old George.

South London pubs with beer gardens

The shaded outdoor garden at the Garden Shed is ideal for summer socialising, and the Telegraph, located within Putney Heath, has delightful outdoor space all year round. The Hope is a dog-friendly pub that overlooks Wandsworth Common, and the burgers are reportedly the best in the area.

Of all the pub gardens in London, you’ll be hard pressed to do better than the Leather Bottle’s. This 300-year-old has a giant outdoor area, complete with beach huts and games. If you enjoy games and outdoor activities, it’s also worth checking out the Green Man on Putney Heath.

West London pubs with beer gardens

West London pubs with beer gardens are fairly common, and the standards are high. We recommend the Queen’s Head in Hammersmith, which serves traditional Sunday roast dinners in a carefully kept garden.

For a relaxed day, consider Crabtree, a traditional country pub with a beautiful tree-covered garden by the river. Dogs love the Duke of Kent in Ealing, as well as the Garden Bar.

Central London pubs with beer gardens

Given the cost of space in Central London, finding a pub with a spacious garden is no easy task, and even pubs with outdoor seating in Central London are often packed. However, there are certainly a few pub gardens in London’s busiest areas – you just need to know where to look.

The Woolpack is one of the best beer gardens in Central London, where you can forget you’re in the city. Similarly, The Princess of Prussia is known for its green patio garden (and the ales and food on offer), which offers an oasis from the hectic city.

Once you’re done planning your trip to the pub garden, check out our self-storage facilities in London – with dozens of stores across the city, we’re sure to have cheap, modern storage units in your neighbourhood.
