Kings Road was first built in 1694 to serve as King Charles II’s private road between his palaces in St James’ and Hampton Court. Even into the 19th century, use of the road was limited to royalty, courtiers and members of the aristocracy – fancy! In 1855, the road was renamed “Cemetery Road”, as the Borough cemetery had recently opened. However, its former regal title was reinstated after the 1911 coronation of George V.
When it comes to shops and places to eat, you really are spoilt for choice here. You’ll find brands such as Zara, Flying Tiger Copenhagen and TOAST here, among many more, of course. Once you’re done shopping for the day, why not have a bite to eat? Kings Road has myriad restaurants to choose from, ranging from Italian to American and even a whiskey lounge!
Kings Road is famous for the old Chelsea Drugstore. Now a McDonald’s, this was an American mall influenced shopping hub that offered music, clothes, food and (of course) a chemist. Sadly, this rather chic spot closed down in 1971. The road was also home to a large amount of musical activity. For example, rock superstars Led Zeppelin started their record label, Swann Song Records, in 1974 at number 484 Kings Road.
