Adjust your behaviour

Have you ever considered how simply adjusting your behaviour can help you use less electricity? This is by far the cheapest way of saving energy in your home as you don’t have to buy anything to get started.

Doing things like air drying your clothes instead of using a tumble dryer, turning off lights and appliances when you leave a room and opening windows instead of using your air conditioner in summer can go a long way towards reducing your energy bill.

Use energy efficient lightbulbs

Are you still using traditional incandescent light bulbs at home? These light bulbs consume an excessive amount of electricity when turned on, so make sure to replace them with newer, energy efficient bulbs if you’re trying to work out how to save energy at home.

Low energy LED bulbs use about 90% less energy than traditional ones and they also tend to last longer, so you’ll have to replace them less often.

Programme your thermostat

According to the energy saving trust installing a room thermostat, a programmer and thermostatic radiator valves, and using these controls efficiently, could save you around £150 a year. If you already have a full set of controls, turning down your room thermostat by just one degree can save around £75 a year.

It’s also a good idea to programme your heating system to only turn on 30 minutes before you get home and turn off again after you’ve gone to bed. Not sure what time you’ll be home? Then it might make sense to invest in smart heating controls that enable you to control your heating via a mobile app. This way, you can make sure you’re not spending any money heating your home unnecessarily.

Insulate your home

Proper insulation is key to saving energy in your home through making sure your house retains heat during the winter and stays cool in summer. While installing insulation might cost some money at first, you will certainly get your money back in energy savings over the coming years.

In fact, according to the National Energy Foundation, as much as 20% of your energy bill can be saved, simply through insulating your loft! What’s more if your walls also aren’t insulated you are probably losing up to half of your home’s heat as a result, which will drive up your energy bill.

Fit a water efficient shower head

Save energy by saving water – it’s a win-win! Think about it this way, if your shower takes hot water straight from your boiler or hot water tank (if you don’t have an electric shower) the more hot water you use during each shower, the higher your energy bill will be.

By fitting a water saving shower head you can reduce your hot water usage while still retaining the sensation of a powerful shower. According to calculations by the energy saving trust a water efficient showerhead can save a four-person household as much as £75 a year on gas for water heating, not to mention the money you’ll save on your water bill if you have a water meter!
