Moving home tips

Keep your belongings safe and maximize your storage unit space by following these packing and storing tips:

  • Buy good quality cardboard boxes as these will allow you to stack them. You will make huge savings with one of our Box Packs, and can have it delivered to your door when you order online from our Box shop
  • To make the best use of your storage space, items such as beds can be taken apart or folded down. Cupboards can be used to store smaller items inside
  • Fill boxes completely and distribute weight evenly – stacks of partly-filled or bulging cardboard boxes may tip or collapse
  • Store heavy items in smaller boxes for easier lifting. Store china and breakables in strong cardboard and plastic boxes, packing with plenty of bubble wrap, tissue paper or loose fill. Do not use newspaper as the ink will stain
  • Hang your clothes – we provide wardrobe boxes for crease-free clothes storage
  • Label all boxes clearly, and keep an inventory of your stored items at home. This will help when retrieving goods from your storage unit and unpacking
  • Position items that you will need access to at the front of your storage unit
  • Avoid stacking or leaning furniture against the walls of your storage room as this may prevent proper ventilation
  • Leather sofas should not be stored on their ends as this can cause stretching and the leather to lose shape
  • Avoid storing heavy items on sofas or mattresses
  • Allow large and heavy items to form the base of any stack in your storage room, with lighter items at the top. Make sure you allow a walk-way for access to your goods
  • Cover all furniture with dust sheets and remember to protect table and chair legs with bubble or foam wrap to avoid scratching. Mirrors and pictures should have their corners protected with foam.
  • Refrigeration equipment should be defrosted and, along with washing machines, left dry and with the door open to allow ventilation and prevent mould
  • Clean all garden furniture before storing and make sure that your lawnmower is drained of petrol
  • Purchase a padlock to secure your storage unit. If there will be more than one person accessing the unit, a combination padlock is most convenient. You can buy yours from any Access Self Storage centre reception.
